Canoe Vs Flat Bottom Boat

Hi guys i was wondering about the advantages and disadvantages of v-shape bottom vs flat bottom vs round shape bottom for a canoe, assuming that the length, width the material and general mass is as similar as possible (with the bottom shape differences) and general shape is the same, all from the point of view of stability and speed.. Flat-bottom boats tend to turn easily (since very little of the hull is below the water line), but they can be slow when fully loaded with gear. canoes with rounded bottoms provide little initial stability, but they offer excellent secondary stability.. On a flat bottom vessel, the limited entry of the hull coupled with its overall width lets you move about or even stand on the gunwales without the worry of rocking about wildly or capsizing. skinny water loves a flat bottom boat. unlike a v-shaped hull, a flat bottom boat rides on top of the water versus pushing it to the side..

Flat bottom kayaks. you may not be surprised to learn that a flat-bottom kayak has a bottom that is, well, flat. this type of kayak is used mostly for floating a river and is best suited to active paddling and white water.. Flat-bottomed canoes are most popular among recreational canoeists. at the cost of speed, they have shallow draft, turn better, and more cargo space. the reason a flat bottom canoe has lower final stability is that the hull must wrap a sharper angle between the bottom and the sides, compared to a more round-bottomed boat.. If you're wanting a canoe to fish with more than one person, consider tandem kayaks or a small jon boat. to answer your question, a flat bottom canoe will be more stable in flat water. in any strong current a rounded bottom is not necessarily more stable, but it's less likely to tip as water moves around the sides..
